A great movie to restore your faith in humans...

"The Ultimate Gift" is a fantastic movie. I went to Pekin to their new stadium-seating theatre today. It's a limited release movie and was not playing around here anywhere. I wanted to go to Scrapbook Magic in Pekin, anyway, so this was an opportunity to do both in one day. And what a beautiful day it was for a drive. It was 75-80 degrees and gorgeous outside. I absolutely fell in love with the movie, especially in this time when a lot of young people think money is everything and that the world owes them a living. Nice to see something like this to lift up the spirits.

Enjoyed Scrapbook Magic, although it's a bit far from home. The drive was a little over an hour, but we will see. The store is medium sized and she carries a lot of nice stuff.

Got home and talked to Kendra on the phone for about an hour and that was nice. Even got to talk to Autumn and Trina a bit, too. Autumn is such a sweetie and I'm hoping I will be able to get off that Friday (the 6th) to babysit the two girls. We could have our Easter then and spend some time with them. Miss them....

3/20/2007 - Trendy Tuesday Tv Husband Challenge

Good morning ladies! Today's trendy Tuesday? Tell me about your tv husband... you know, that guy on tv that you crush on? Obsess over?

My first tv boyfriend was Mike Seaver from Growing Pains. .... Sigh.

Now, I have moved on to tougher, meaner pastures. I am officially Mrs. Jack Bauer... unless of course Michael Vartan from Alias returns to tv, then I will be Mrs. Whatever Character Michael Vartan plays.

My husband informed me that he would be Mr. Jennifer Gardner in whatever show she was on (I guess we are an Alias kind of family). Look out Ben Affleck!

When I was really young, I wanted to be Mrs. Dr. Ben Casey (Vince Edwards) and then I graduated on to wanting to be Mrs. Pete Cochran (Michael Cole of Mod Squad). Next came Mrs. Appolo (Richard Hatch of Battlestar Galactia. Then there was Mrs. Spike (James Marsters of Buffy....okay so maybe I didn't want to be a vampire, but Spike was still hottttt!).

Currently there is a tie between the good-boy/bad-boy.....Mrs. Jack Shephard (Matthew Fox) and Mrs. James "Sawyer" Ford (Josh Holloway) both of LOST!

Coffee Addiction.....

Okay, this is kinda long, but I LOVE it!

You Know You're Addicted to Coffee When...
You can jump start your car without cables.

You answer the door before people knock.

You get a speeding ticket even when you are parked.

You've worn out your third pair of shoes this week.

Your eyes stay open even when you sneeze.

You grind coffee beans in your mouth.

You can type sixty words per minute -- with your feet.

You soak your dentures in coffee overnight.

You sleep with your eyes open.

You have a picture of your coffee mug on your coffee mug.

Instant coffee takes too long to make.

You channel surf faster without the remote.

You don't sweat... you percolate.

You short out motion detectors.

You walk twenty miles on your treadmill before you realize it's not plugged in.

The only time you are standing still is during an earthquake!

You've worn the finish off your coffee table.

All your kids are named Joe.

Juan Valdez named his donkey after you.

People get dizzy just watching you.

Starbucks owns the mortgage on your house.

The nurse needs a scientific calculator to take your pulse.

The Taster's Choice couple wants to adopt you.

When someone asks 'How are you?' you say, 'Good to the last drop'.

You buy milk by the barrel.

You can outlast the Energizer bunny.

You can take a picture of yourself from ten feet away without using the timer.

You can't even remember your second cup.

You chew on other people's fingernails.

You don't even wait for the water to boil anymore.

You don't get mad, you get steamed.

You don't need a hammer to pound in nails.

You don't tan, you roast.

You forget to unwrap candy bars before eating them.

You go to AA meetings just for the free coffee.

You go to sleep just so you can wake up and smell the coffee.

You have to watch videos in fast-forward.

You haven't blinked since the last lunar eclipse.

You help your dog chase its tail.

You introduce your spouse as your coffee mate.

You just completed another sweater and you don't know how to knit.

You lick your coffeepot clean.

You name your cats Cream and Sugar.

You ski uphill.

You speak perfect Arabic without ever taking a lesson.

You speed-walk in your sleep.

You spend every vacation visiting Maxwell House.

You think being called a drip is a compliment.

You think CPR stands for Coffee Provides Resuscitation.

You'd be willing to spend time in a Turkish prison.

Your first-aid kit contains two pints of coffee with an I.V. hookup.

Your coffee mug is insured by Lloyds of London.

Your lips are permanently stuck in the sipping position.

Your nervous twitch registers on the Richter scale.

Your only source of nutrition comes from Sweet & Low.

Your taste buds are so numb; you could drink your lava lamp.

Your Thermos is on wheels.

You're so wired, you pick up AM radio.

You've built a miniature city out of little plastic stirrers.

You've worn out the handle on your favourite mug.

You take your morning coffee with you in the shower.

Your heart beats noticeably faster as a reaction to the smell of coffee.

You actually get these jokes and pass them on to other friends who are addicted to coffee.

Right Now?

3/18/2007 - What are you earning right now?

This might be my favorite quote yet. Really. Hope you have a wonderful Sunday!

In old age you must put up with the FACE, the FRIENDS, the HEALTH, and the CHILDREN you have EARNED. -Fay Weldon.

Earned? To me, it's more like CREATED. My face looks the way it does in part because of the care or lack of I've taken in the past. Too many sunburns and not enough sunscreen (back in the 50's and 60's that didn't exist) and the creams and gentle cleansings I'm giving it now. I'm learning more each year about my skin and learning to love it no matter how it looks.

My friends....they have come from the way I've treated people in the past. Some have come in and out of my life because of lack of keeping up, changing and differing attitudes towards things. And some have stayed because of learning to value friendship as we get older. As I've gotten older, I've developed more friendships and hung onto them because of their value.

Health....once again, we create a lot of our own health. It comes from the way we eat, exercise, lifestyle, genetics and attitude. Health is one area where I'm experiencing some changes within the last 3 years, but my attitude keeps getting better and better.....so that has to be a plus.

Our children....well, we definitely created them and molded them a lot into the persons they are now. Whether for good or bad, they pick up our habits and traits. I loved raising my children, but now that they are grown, my love for them is even greater as I see them develop into mature adults whom I can relate to on a grownup level.

Green Day!

Happy St. Patricks Day!!! 3/17/07

May your blessings outnumber
The shamrocks that grow,
And may trouble avoid you
Wherever you go.
~Irish Blessing

Do you celebrate St. Patricks Day? Green Beer? Corn beef and cabbage? Do you celebrate your ethnic heritage on another (less green) day?

We mostly celebrate this day with food and wearing green. I'm a redhead and part Irish, but we aren't really partying kind of people. Sometimes I make corn beef and cabbage and sometimes we make Rubens. This time we were planning on going out to a new restaurant and have Rubens, but David came home sick from work and we couldn't go. So.....I went up to ElPaso and got Rubens, fries and Ruben soup (that was to die for) and we celebrated that way. He's feeling much better now so it turned out okay.

Love Cynthia!

Lynsey sent out emails to everyone on The Paper Moon's mailing list that we were having a surprise party for Cynthia Friday night at Carrie's church. We all made 8X8 scrapbook pages about our years at the store. It turned out wonderful. We all got there about an hour before she did. Joan even stopped by her house after her husband (Randy) took her and the boys out to eat and picked up her mom to be there. She had actually worked at the store to help out a bit at one time.

She totally didn't see it coming and was very pleased. We all told a lot of stories and made plans to do things in the future. Lisa is in the process of setting up her basement into a scrapbook haven for all of us. She even bought the big AccuCut die-cut machine from the store and most of the good dies. We are all planning several page-swaps throughout the year. Carrie is having crops on the 2nd Friday nights of the month at her church. She is going to work at Scrapadoodle (who is moving into a larger spot) and they even want Cynthia to teach some classes. Cynthia is wanting to host some scrapbook weekends also so things are looking up. Carrie also is having classes for scrapbooking and stamping the last Saturday of each month, which I have already signed up to bring treats in April for. Just so happy that we can all spend that special time together.

Cynthia, Joan, Karin & Danette

Carrie and Joanie

Lisa and Chris

Randy, Cynthia's Mom, Cynthia and 2 of her 3 boys
(and yes, they are all as tall as they seem)

Cake & Flowers (we each brought a flower)

Our weekend at Stony Creek and we ate out at Jonah's
Second page is Vonda, Cynthia & Danette in the crop room/bottom picture is Chris in crop room

National Scrapbook Day, May 6, 2000 at Freedom Hall in Morton, IL (where Cynthia lives). (unknown, Janet, Karin, me, Wendy, Jocelyn, unknown, husband & wife, Rose, unknown) Second page, Janet & myself and behind is us I don't remember them. This was my first all-day crop ever and fell in love! It was called "A Prescription For My Addiction" and we had to dress up, as you can tell by the photos, like doctors and nurses.

Winning the Lottery!

3/14/07 JACKPOT!!!

I'm going to do a lot of fishing.
— ED NABORS, 52
a Georgia truck driver who stepped forward to claim half of a $390 million jackpot, the richest lottery prize in U.S. history

So what would you do?

Well, first I would have to actually play the lottery to win, which I don't. There have been those rare occasions, but not often enough to ever win. But if by some fluke I did win, I would find me a great investment counselor. I would pay off the house (which is close to being done anyway) and give a large portion to my favorite charities. There might be one BIG vacation, but there wouldn't be a lot of splurging. I'm 7 years away from retirement and not sure if I would stick it out or not. Just depends on a long talk with dh and how I'm feeling.

But I love the idea of being able to give to charities I love and having money to make sure retirement is as comfortable as possible. I would also get a new phone number and give it out to NO ONE except my daughter, granddaughter and son! NO ONE ELSE!

Trendy Tuesday - I Must Admit:

Well ladies, pull up a chair to today's coffee hour. I am a Chai Latte girl myself, how about you? Today's trendy Tuesday topic ... admit something!

Here are a few of mine -
I am not a pet person. With a few exceptions (Barb's dog, Memphis) I do not really want a pet or to play with others pets. This doesn't mean I hate animals - I really don't, just don't want any myself!
I hate watching movies more than once. There are very few movies that I have seen over and over - Top Gun, Legally Blonde, Braveheart. I also hate watching tv show reruns.
I do not crave sweets - candy, chocolate... much more of a salts girl!

What about you?

- I do not drink soda - EVER - not any kind, flavor or brand.

- We have 14 steps going upstairs and 12 going down to the basement and I count them EVERY SINGLE TIME I go up or down.

- When we have company and I set the table, it has to be absolutely perfect with plates all the same space from the edge of table, silverware on the correct sides of plates and knives facing the correct direction.

- Cannot stand anyone coming up to me and touching my hair!

- Keep a stash of goodies (chocolate, cookies and some chips) in my craftroom hidden from the rest of the world.

- I have Chapstick with me at all times, 365 days of the year. It's in my pocket, both cars, on my nightstand and in every room of the house.

Okay, I'm starting to sound a little OCD even to myself!LOL!

Monday's Thought.....

Monday: What do you want?

The first step in getting what you want out of life is this: decide what you want.
-Ben Stein

Seems like a big thought for a Monday.

It is very easy to let every day just slip away without thinking about what you want. We all want the basics - food, getting to and from work, taking care of our children or spouse - just the basics. There isn't much thinking involved in that. Just routine. But to really think about what we want out of life - that's another story. I know a lot of people who don't think beyond today or tomorrow. Any maybe occasionally a vacation or small future event. But I'm talking about the big things in life, like what kind of person do you want to be, what kind of legacy do you want to leave behind. It takes time and effort to come to definite decisions about what your belief system is and what kind of person you will strive to be. And then, for me, lots of prayer and spending time with God. I know I want to constantly improve in my thoughts and actions towards others. It's easy to love those who love you or are just nice people, but what about those people that others have a hard time getting along with. What kind of person do I want to be towards them?

I want to be kind to everyone and patient and calm during all of life's storms. I'm striving and praying but will always be going in that direction.

Gotta Love Coffee Quotes!

Saturday 3/3/07: Coffee

"Coffee: creative lighter fluid." -Floyd Maxwell

Creative lighter fluid? Definitely! Coffee can get me charged quicker than anything (other than my rather active 3 year old granddaughter and my talkative 30 year old daughter). Working an odd schedule (night shifter), David and I live a rather odd life. Coffee is my staple, my lifeline on the weekends and keeps me alert when I need to be. I don't overdo, but a good cup can get me down here in my craft room creating instead of sitting on my butt and flipping through channels on the TV.

Starbucks is my place of choice and I drop in every Saturday morning after work, although we have some other wonderful places in town. I love the Coffee Hound downtown with a very friendly atmosphere (and David says "hot chicks"). Then there is Bevande over at Eagle Station area. They make the best Cafe Mocha,,,,,using dark chocolate. I order my coffee beans from Coffee AM online because they carry good beans and the most extensive line of flavored coffees I've ever seen.

A few more of my favorite quotes......

"If it weren't for caffeine, I'd probably have no personality at all!"

"Coffee: Water with an Attitude!"

"Decaffeinated coffee is the devil's blend."

"Decaf? No, it's dangerous to dilute my caffeine stream."

"The morning cup of coffee has an exhilaration about it
which the cheering influence of the afternoon or evening
cup of tea cannot be expected to reproduce."
Oliver Wendell Holmes

"I make serious coffee - so strong it wakes up the neighbors."

"I don't have a problem with caffeine. I have a problem without caffeine!"

" Coffee falls into the stomach ... ideas begin to move,
things remembered arrive at full gallop ... the shafts
of wit start up like sharp-shooters, similes arise,
the paper is covered with ink ..."
Honore de Balzac

All said and done, I'm a coffee person.

I'm Back!

Boy, have I ever neglected my blog these last couple of weeks. Been busy and couldn't seem to find time to get to it. Had some projects to get caught up on. But I'm back now....so I'm leaving you with a little story I found on someone else's blog..........hope it makes you smile!

An elderly Chinese woman had two large pots, each hung on the ends of a pole, which she carried across her neck.
One of the pots had a crack in it while the other pot was perfect and always delivered a full portion of water, at the end of the long walk from the stream to the house, the cracked pot arrived only half full.

For a full two years this went on daily, with the woman bringing home only one and a half pots of water. Of course, the perfect pot was proud of its accomplishments. But the poor cracked pot was ashamed of its own imperfection, and miserable that it could only do half of what it had been made to do.

After 2 years of what it perceived to be bitter failure, it spoke to the woman one day by the stream. "I am ashamed of myself, because this crack in my side causes water to leak out all the way back to your house."The old woman smiled, "Did you notice that there are flowers on your side of the path, but not on the other pot's side? That's because I have always known about your flaw, so I planted flower seeds on your
side of the path, and every day while we walk back, you water them.
For two years I have been able to pick these beautiful flowers to decorate the table. Without you being just the way you are, there would not be this beauty to grace the house."

Each of us has our own unique flaw. But it's the cracks and flaws we each have that make our lives together so very interesting and rewarding. You've just got to take each person for what they are and look for the good in them.

SO, to all of my crackpot friends, have a great day and remember to smell the flowers on your side of the path!

Gotta Love Martha

Behind every good President. . .

. . . is a great First Lady. In honor of Presidents' Day, I chose a quote from our first First Lady.

I am determined to be cheerful and happy in whatever situation I may find myself. For I have learned that the greater part of our misery or unhappiness is determined not by our circumstance but by our disposition. -Martha Washington

Hey, what do you know, I'm just like Martha! I always knew this was a universal principle that applied to everyone and through all time, but it's nice to see it confirmed in writing! (I've also seen Paul write the same thing in the Bible)

Lazy Sunday (at least for pets)

Can you get any more comfortable than this?

Susie is soaking up every ounce of heat she can!

On a more active side, I got up this morning, showered, stripped the bed of sheets, washed sheets, had coffee, read the paper, watered my inside plants, did 2 more loads of laundry and put them away, put clean dishes away and reloaded dishwasher, vacuumed stairs, vacuumed living room, moved dining room furniture and vacuumed, straightened basement for 15 minutes, scooped (Susie), changed outside Valentine decorations and wreath to St. Patty's Day stuff, went to the antique mall in ElPaso with David, bought an old metal stamp stand, went to eat at the new restaurant "Olive Branch", went to Furrows Winery in ElPaso and bought 2 bottles Catawba white wine, 2 bottles Table Blush white wine and 1 bottle Two Berry red wine, came home and put clean sheets on the bed, changed out of good clothes, had a glass of wine that was already in refrig, made a layout of favorite vacation place for BPS class, made Rolodex cards for BPS class, watched the Daytona 500, ordered pizza from Casey's and went and picked it up and that brings me up to now! And all my pets did all day was sleep!!! What is wrong with this?

And of course while I'm trying to get a picture of my new stamp stand, who jumps up on my scrapbook table? You guessed it, The Supreme Ruler of Our Home, Susie!

Grey's......

I'll admit it--ever since

Izzie screamed those strange words at George
and Derek emerged all wet and very hot from the water with Meredith
and McSteamy and McDreamy were friends again
and Alex and Addison were undressing each other with their eyes
and Christina realizes she might lose "her person"

I've completely, totally, and utterly had Grey's on the brain. So, who better to offer up a quote today than Meredith Grey.

I've heard that it's possible to grow up - I've just never met anyone who's actually done it. Without parents to defy, we break the rules we make for ourselves. We throw tantrums when things don't go our way, we whisper secrets with our best friends in the dark, we look for comfort where we can find it, and we hope - against all logic, against all experience. Like children, we never give up hope... -Dr. Meredith Grey, Grey's Anatomy

I feel this way all the time--like I'm just playing house and haven't actually grown up. I feel this way every single time I celebrate a birthday. This year, it was "Am I seriously 27? I can't be 27. I think I might still be a kid." My parents are constantly saying things to me that I find completely ridiculous. Maybe I react this way because I still think I'm a kid and that my every move needs to work towards defying my parents. Will I ever finally just feel like an adult?

I have to admit I just discovered Grey's. Mostly because I already feel I watch enough TV and didn't want to start watching something else when it came on. We work nights, so we tape all the shows we want to watch and then view them the next morning after work. I have a show for M-F (with 3 on Monday now). But when Lifetime decided to start running Grey's on Sundays, I made the decision to start watching them from the beginning. WOW....have I ever been missing out. I was hooked from the very first show. Now that being said.....on to the quote of the day:

I have to admit to feeling like I was "playing" adult for a lot of years. Who in the world decided I was old enough to be married? Who decided I was responsible enough to have children? When did the idea of retirement start popping up in my head? When did my children, grandchildren and even my younger coworkers start turning to me for advise? And why?
And I've had these questions for most of my adult life. And then one day it happened. My father passed away 13 years ago but my mom was still around. Then she passed almost 2 years ago and a month before that my last grandparent. That's when it happened. I'm the last link between my children and what comes after we leave this world. There is no barrier between that and me anymore. Retirement is looming ahead in the next 6-7 years, people turn to me for advise "like I know the answers", and I'm starting to feel like I actually know a thing or two about life. Decisions are easier, I guess, because I have been through things that help me get through the next thing. I truly believe each experience we encounter prepares us for the next and makes it easier to handle. So here I am, 54 and finally feeling like an adult. But don't get me wrong, there are still moments when that isn't the case, but they are fewer than they used to be. I like getting older and hopefully wiser and looking forward to all life has to bring me.

And by the way, I LOVE Dr. McDreamy!

Snowing again....

Well, here we go again. I was planning on going to The Paper Moon today and getting the bag of stuff from the crop room I had put aside (they hadn't priced it yet) and looking around the store for the last time. It's snowing and blowing here and getting worse as I write. The store is only open Thursday, Friday and Saturday til the end of the month. So next Saturday will be their last day. Hopefully I can get over there then. Here is the paper tower I bought.....even David likes how it looks.

Went up to the Lake Road Inn for the Friday night fish fry last night. It was our holiday and we wanted to start the 3-day weekend off right. It was great, as usual, as only a 3-4 minute drive from home. Can't beat that!!!

Trendy Tuesday #3...comfort

Trendy Tuesday 2/13/07

Today's topic: Comfort
What makes you comfortable?

This is my bed, with a good book, my reading glasses and a cup of coffee. Doesn't get much more comfortable than this.

Hearts to you, sweetie!

Be My Valentine? 2/14/07

Are you a Valentines kinda person? Are you a romantic? I figured today would have to be a lovey dovey kind of quote day. My favorite love quote?

Once in awhile, right in the middle of an ordinary life, love gives us a fairy tale -- unkown

I kinda like this because I think it describes my life! The sweetest thing in my life is the everyday - not the big and sweet - but the little things. My husband who knows that I love diet cherry coke, movie theater popcorn, and football Sundays that is the romance in my life! I like the quiet and not obvious. What about you?

This is something I think of often. I still remember the day a small group of ladies at work were talking (all desperate for a man in their lives) and one of them said "this will be the first year in a long time I will have a boyfriend at Valentines. I can't wait to get something romantic".....to which I replied...."I've got all the romance a girl could want. It's not the flowers, heart-shaped boxes of candy, candlelit dinners or wild words of love whispered in my ear. Romance and love is the guy who picks up his socks without being asked or even thinking about it, the guy who grabs the vacuum and uses it without being asked, the guy who won't let me bring in the groceries from the car but does it for me, the guy who lets me off at the door at work because it is raining or picks me up in the morning with the car warm and running in the winter, who brings home my favorite cheese from the grocery store just because I like it.......those are the things romance and love consist of".

I know some of those women did not understand me, but they are still looking for that elusive "love" they think they want and need and I already have it. True love isn't the big gestures, but the little every day things that tell you how a person really feels.

Yes, I did get candy and flowers for Valentine's Day, but I also have all the other things that make my life and relationship to my husband wonderful.

Monday, February 12, 2007

Almost Valentine's Day!

This is what I saw when David walked back in the house from going and getting the oil changed in the car (thought that was the only thing he was doing). But we are supposed to get a major snow storm and winds tonight and he wanted to make sure I got my present.

Then he had me open the white bag on the counter....and there were my favorites! Chocolate truffles from The Confectionary in downtown Bloomington. I love their chocolates and these are new ones they are making. He got extra coffee, raspberry and dark chocolate ones, as those are my favorites. I tried a rum one already and they definitely use real rum! Delicious!!!
Yipee, Valentine's Day!

Hard work pays off....

2/12/07 - Time Flies. Be Prepared!

When I recently got a new job, I heard a lot of "well, I guess that just shows its who you know." While I realize people didn't intend to be insulting... I was a little wounded by that. Yes, I have good connections - I have worked hard to make them! I hear a lot of people complain that other people have better LUCK than they do.... hmmm. I think I agree with Ann Landers:

Opportunities are usually disguised as hard work, so most people don't recognize them. --Ann Landers

I do not believe in "luck". If you want to use the word, then realize that we each make our own "luck". People who succeed do so because they have worked hard in life, whether it's making connections, working hard at their jobs, stretching themselves to help others or being creative. There is not luck there....just applying yourself. The people who feel they have had "bad luck" usually do not want to do what the next guy did to get where he is at. Things just do not fall into people's laps by accident, but are achieved by constantly giving your best and doing what is right even when you do not feel like it.

What do I fear?

Fear

I thought a good topic today would be those secret fears we all have...

I've been absolutely terrified every moment of my life -- and I've never let it keep me from doing a single thing I wanted to do. -- Georgia O'Keefe

What do I fear and does it keep me from living my life? The fears are few, but none of them have ever stopped me from living. The one real fear I have is snakes.
Do not want to watch them on TV, see them in a movie, discuss them, look at them in magazines or go into the reptile house at Brookfield Zoo (or any other zoo, but we visit this the most). I used to have nightmares about them as a child and I guess that has stayed with me.

David and I went to LasVegas a few years ago and went out to Red Rock Canyon to walk around and take pictures. He had me go out on one of the trails a distance from him so he could get a picture. Once I was out there, he yelled out to me "you do realize there are real snakes out there".....I could have strangled him. He thought he was being pretty funny and we laugh about it now, but at the time I was not amused.

Here is a 2-page spread I did for a Donna Downey class last year about fears. It talks about going to Brookfield Zoo and how my girls like to go into the reptile house, but I won't go.

Diva Weaknesses

So continuing on the diva theme (come on, the Grammy's are coming up!) Here is one of the spunkiest artists in any genre... love this tell it like it is lady, especially because she is like us!! I think sometimes it is easy to dismiss our weaknesses but they are part of us too! What are yours?

My weaknesses have always been food and men - in that order. -- Dolly Parton

My weaknesses: Food of all kinds (that way I don't have to keep chocolate and coffee in their own categories) and the other used to be baskets. Baskets has pretty much been replaced with rubber stamps/scrapbook paper.

I LOVE food....good food. I enjoy going out to eat to a good restaurant and would rather eat at home than eat fast food. I love potlucks and have to try everything there. We won't even get started on baked goods, of which my favorite are homemade fruit pies. I enjoy all the festivals in our area because the food is so wonderful. I love all kinds of food.....Italian, Mexican, German, southern. Well, just about all foods.

My other weakness used to be Longaberger baskets, of which I own a few hundred (and many antique baskets). But since discovering rubber stamping and scrapbooking, stamps and paper have taken over my weakness. I can't pass us a font stamp to save me, especially if they are the clear acrylic kind. And scrapbook paper? My room is overflowing with it. I could scrapbook every photo I will ever take and never have to buy paper again, but we all know that won't happen.

My weaknesses?.....I call them my enjoyments!!!

Perfection???

The thing that is really hard, and really amazing, is giving up on being perfect and beginning the work of becoming yourself.-Anna Quindlen

I have so much to say about this quote that I'm not even sure where to start. Who are you? Truly. Without anyone telling you what to do or when. Without being influenced by catalogs, commercials, and celebrities. Without someone else's ideas about perfection. Who are you?

Perfection is a hard one for me. Maybe not with my looks, but with just about everything else in life. I fight constantly to keep myself under control. I want the house to be cleaned a certain way, the laundry to be folded a certain way, the dishwasher loaded a certain way.....well, you get the picture. I even have to shop in the grocery store going down the isles in the same direction every time or I feel confused. Maybe there's just something not right about me, or maybe I'm a little to obsessive. Not sure, but I do know that rarely do things work out perfect and I've learned to live with that. And not just live with it, but be at peace with it. I'm seeing that at 54 I'm realizing that things do not have to be perfect in order to get done or even be done to my satisfaction. If imperfect still gets the job done, what does it matter. Maybe I'll always have to work on that, but at least I'm trying.

The picture is for those of us in cold climates,,,,,reminding us that summer will return!!!

My Trendy Tuesday

Trendy Tuesday 2-6-07

Have your fingers frozen to the bone? Are they all typed out? Are your hands covered in any of the following? paper cuts? glitter? paint? raspberry jelly? Are you a manicure kinda girl? Do you wear any jewelry? Your hands are a critical part (yet often ignored) aspect of your daily life.

So... for today's Trendy Tuesday Challenge. Take a photo of your hands. (scrap it if you like...) and tell me about them!

Okay, I wasn't going to post my hands like this but instead clean them up. I decided against it and just to be honest. This is exactly how my hands look after 8 hours of working at the Post Office. I spent almost the entire 8 hours touching paper (mail) or dirty cardboard and plastic trays. The paper and cardboard suck every ounce of moisture out of my hands that they have. In the winter, they crack, peel and bleed. My nails are not strong, anyway, and this makes them worse. I usually have a bandage somewhere on each hand (if not more than one) because they are bleeding and the mail keeps cutting them deeper. The containers and trays the mail come in are so completely dirty and most of it comes off on my hands and clothes. I always hate going to the grocery store in the morning when I get off work.....all the ladies there in their beautiful suits, heels and perfectly manicured hands. My clothes are dirty, my make-up has run, my hair is falling down and my hands are awful. I always wonder if they think I crawled out of bed like that!!!LOL! I keep a nail brush at work to clean them up if I know I'm going to stop....but honestly sometimes they are so sore that I can't use it on them. Such is the life of my hands. But I wouldn't go back to office work for anything. I actually like what I do!

Baby, It's Cold Outside! (Monday)

According to the nerdy meteorologist's best estimates, the temperature here will not be above zero at all today. And probably not tomorrow either. I'm not even going to mention how cold it is supposed to be with the wind chill. It will frighten even the toughest person.

I didn't even consider the fact that cold temperatures make for a really unsafe environment for kiddos to attend school. Not until this very morning when my phone rang at 5:45 a.m. In a teacher's house, a 5:45 a.m. phone call can only mean one thing. . . . SNOW DAY!

You learn at a very young age that, besides the obvious Christmas break, summer, chicken pox epidemic, and the time when you realize the smelly kid who picks his boogers and eats them is sick, Snow Days are the best damn thing to happen to your school year.-Chad Stevenson

Seriously. There is nothing better than a snow day, not even summer vacation. I so wasn't expecting to have off work today, but guess what?!? I do. I imagine this is what it would be like to have a surprise eighth day in the week. I wasn't expecting it. I don't have anything planned. It's just an entire day to do exactly what I want to. I just won't think about the fact that this means there's an extra day tacked on to the end of the year. . .

What would you do with an entire unexpected day off? What is your favorite childhood snow day memory? What's the weather like where you are?

When I saw the words "snow day", my first thought was of parents that work and have to find alternative means of babysitters for their children. What is great for one person can be a problem for another. That said, my daughter works for a school and LOVES her snow days because it means she can stay home with her two girls.

I actually don't remember having snow days when I was a kid (that was a long time ago) but we did get an extra day off not too long ago for the passing of President Ford. I had a long weekend anyway and then got the extra day off, which turned out great. Right now we are snow free, but it is still very very cold.

Finished up Christmas Journal!!!

I've actually had this done, but not scanned. Finally got that done and here it is! I did stop my journal on January 1st. Since I was already way past the time and my book is getting way too fat, I thought that would be enough memories to keep me happy.

Got some great gifts this year....

Bought 8 rolls of paper (even though I didn't need it...but it was on SALE, bought 2 Xmas picture frames for girls' pictures, 8X8 Xmas album, plus Hobby Lobby has their 12X12 sb paper 5 for $1.

Being a night worker, my sleep patterns are different, but I liked using the Pearl Ex Powder on the word "sleep" and I used the Heidi Swapp mask alphabet for the z's and painted over them with acrylic white paint.

All my favorite December things....

Our Christmas card for this year....these are a picture of Trina and myself at the Hilton Hotel in Bloomington, MN and Trina and David inside the Mall of America.

Just a little note about every month in 2006 (I've realized, looking back through other calendars, that we don't do anything in January!!!)

We are not "New Year's Evers" so this is a self-taken picture and the only celebration we do. Loved using the glitter on the letters.

My resolution page....the little "hope" clear plastic thingy at the bottom is from Close To My Heart as a gift from my friend.

Used some metal words I had "happy" and "celebrate" plus some stamps I bought just for this project.

Used up the last of my "holiday" little license plates.

Had a great Sunday....Yeah Colts!

I baked Marshall Fields Cinnamon Crunch Muffins to take to a Super Bowl crop I was going to at the Paper Moon (possibly the last crop I will be able to attend at the store since it is closing). They were a huge hit. David had me put the 2 mini-helmets he has of the teams playing.....the Bears and Colts. The girls thought that was great and had to take pictures of them in the basket with the muffins.

We had a fantastic time, although a lot did not get done in the way of scrappin'. Cynthia has started pricing stuff in the store and the back room, where she keeps absolutely everything you could possible want. Whenever she has bought something to sell to customers, she bought it for the back room also so we croppers could use it. Some things were not priced yet, so we picked out what we wanted and put them in bags with our names on them and Lynsey put them in the back room. I picked out a bunch of used stamps (at half price), scissors, an alphabet Coluzzle (both upper and lower case), big circle Coluzzle and 3 different idea books. I also went ahead and bought one of the lime green swivel chairs (planning on recovering it) and a paper tower. The paper tower has the EK Success plastic paper holders that has 31 trays so I can get a lot of paper in it. Thank goodness the girls helped me down with those big items (thanks to Lyndsey, Danette and Lisa for braving the freezing cold outside without coats).

Came home and David had started making the Philly Cheesesteak Sandwiches. Turned out great and then we watched the game. Have to say I was pleased with the outcome. I'm neither a Bears or Colts fan (go 49er's!!!) but one of my favorite people at work is a Colts fan so I was wanting them to win for him.

That was my fantastic Sunday. Us girls at the Paper Moon are going to make plans to have a surprise party for Cynthia so she will know how much we care about her. We are all planning some get togethers in the future,,,,,because truly our friendships we have made there mean more to us than the scrappin'. Looking forward to whatever the future holds!

It's a Beautiful Day in the Neighborhood!I thought a quote from good ol' Fred was just perfect for today.

The greatest gift you ever give is your honest self.-Fred Rogers

I don't really have a comment on this....I will let the following information I found about Lee Marvin, Captain Kangaroo and Mr. Rogers speak for themselves.

Real Heroes
The rest of the story....

Captain Kangaroo passed away on January 23, 2004 at age 76, which is odd, because he always looked to be 76 (DOB: 6/27/27.) It reminded me of the following story.....

Some people have been a bit offended that the actor, Lee Marvin, is buried in a grave alongside 3 and 4 star generals at Arlington National Cemetery. His marker gives his name, rank (PVT) and service (USMC) -- Nothing else.

Here's a guy who was only a famous movie star who served his time, why the heck does he rate burial with these guys? Well, following is the amazing answer: I always like Lee Marvin, but didn't know the extent of his Corps experiences.

In a time when many Hollywood stars served their country in the time of war, only to be trotted out to perform for the cameras in war bond promotions, Lee Marvin was a genuine hero. He won the Navy Cross at Iwo Jima. There is only one higher Naval award....the Medal Of Honor.

If that is a surprising comment on the true character of the man, he credits his sergeant with an even greater show of bravery. = Dialog from "The Tonight Show with Johnny Carson": His guest was Lee Marvin. Johnny said, "Lee, I'll bet a lot of people are unaware that you were a Marine in the initial landing at Iwo Jima....and that during the course of that action you earned the Navy Cross and were severely wounded.";"Yea, yeah I got shot square in the bottom and they gave me the Cross for securing a hot spot about halfway up Suribachi. Bad thing about getting shot up on a mountain is the guys getting shot hauling you down. But Johnny, at Iwo I served under the bravest man I ever knew.... We both got the cross the same day, but what he did for his Cross made mine look cheap in comparison. That dumb guy actually stood up on Red Beach. Bullets flying by, with mortar rounds landing everywhere and he stood there as the main target of gunfire so that he could get his men to safety. He did this on more than one occasion because his men's safety was more important than his own life.

That Sergeant and I have been lifelong friends. When they brought me off Suribachi, we passed the Sergeant and he lit a smoke and passed it to me, lying on my belly on the litter and said, "where'd they get you Lee?" "Well, Bob....if you make it home before me, tell Mom to sell the outhouse!"

Johnny, I'm not lying, Sergeant Keeshan was the bravest man I ever knew. The Sergeant's name is Bob Keeshan----You and the world know him as Captain Kangaroo."

On another note, there was this wimpy little man (who just passed away) on PBS, gentle and quiet. Mr. Rogers is another of those you would least suspect of being anything but what he now portrays to our youth.

But Mr. Rogers was a U.S. Navy Seal, combat-proven in Vietnam with over twenty-five confirmed kills to his name. He wore a long-sleeved sweater on TV, to cover the many tattoos on his forearm and biceps. He was a master in small arms and hand-to-hand combat, able to disarm or kill in a heartbeat.

After the war Mr. Rogers became an ordained Presbyterian Minister....dedicating the rest of his life to trying to help lead children on the right path in life. He hid away the tattoos and his past life and won our hearts with his quiet wit and charm. America's real heroes don't flaunt what they did; they quietly go about their day-to-day lives, doing what they do best. They earned our respect and freedoms that we all enjoy.

Look around and see if you can find one of those heroes in your midst. ----Often, they are the ones you'd least suspect, but would most like to have on your side if anything ever happened

Take the time to thank anyone that has fought for our freedom. With encouragement they could be the next Captain Kangaroo or Mr. Rogers

Keep on track!

2007, Day 32

Even if you are on the right track, you will get run over if you just sit there.
-Will Rogers

Remember those resolutions you set for 2007? Or the word you chose to represent your year? What are you doing to work toward them?
(I so needed this reminder today. I don't even remember what my resolutions are!)

Heading in the right direction and going in the right direction are not the same things. It's easy to start something and be heading in the right direction, but if you don't keep moving, what good is it. Going forward and achieving your goals is what it is all about. I am right on track with my resolutions....or should I say resolution (singular). Every year I attempt several things and end up quiting all of them. This year I picked ONE area and have been sticking with it. Yes, it covers several things, but it is working for me. It's the "do it when you don't feel like it and the feel like it will come". Every time I think "I really don't want to do that or don't feel like doing that" I go ahead and do it anyway. Because of this, my house is absolutely spotless, papers are all organized, bills paid, scrapbooking getting accomplished, cards stamped for everyone's birthday for the next few months, laundry is done and put away......in other words I've got my life going in the right direction (for me anyway) and I am happy and feel like I've accomplished something every day.

Don't Be Mean....

Day 31: 1/31/07

I am very little inclined on any occasion to say anything unless I hope to produce some good by it.-Abraham Lincoln

I have to agree with Abe. And it is something I am constantly trying to improve in myself. It is soooo easy to say something that produces no good, especially when you are in a conversation with a group of people who are bashing or criticizing someone else. I can too quickly just jump in and add my two cents. But the feelings of guilt I feel afterwards are really not worth it. It doesn't cost any money or time to say something nice instead of something mean. Most people hear enough negative talk during the day without me adding to it. And I would like to be remembered as the one person who said something nice to them that day. It might just be the one bright spot in their otherwise awful day. I must keep at it, because God knows I'm far from perfect.....I just keep plugging away.

Got mess?

One of the advantages of being disorderly is that one is constantly making exciting discoveries.-A. A. Milne

I heard yesterday that January is organization month. Wish someone would have told me a little closer to the beginning of the month! The report said that someone with a messy desk is 36% more productive than someone who is exceptionally tidy.

Beyond your desk, what's your style? Messy? Organized? Organized piles of mess? (This might be a good one to document with photos.)

Well, I just posted some pics of my scrapbook room and I have to say I love organization. I hate having to look for something and not being able to find it. I take the time to go through my sb supplies from time to time to see what I have. When you have so much stuff, it is easy to forget so I try to refresh myself. David bought me a labeler several Christmases ago and I tend to label everything I can. My spice rack is on a stair-step thing in the cabinet, but all the spice names are on the middle of the bottles. I labeled around all the lids so I could see them when I open the door without moving them. I labeled my upstairs linen closet with sheet sizes, pillowcase sizes, blanket and mattress pad sizes. I guess I can get a little obsessive sometimes, but what the heck, I enjoy it!

These are just some of the "organization" books that I own!

"Food Thoughts" turned into something else....

Food for Thought

Around my house, Sundays are a big food day. I love to cook and having a whole day to work on a meal is a real treat for me. I know a lot of us maybe have resolutions to trim our waistlines or watch our calories... so fess up and tell me about your relationship with food!

The only time to eat diet food is while you're waiting for the steak to cook -- Julia Child.

I have to admit this is the first year in many that my eating habits have not been part of my new year's resolution. Every year I struggle with this, expecting that this time I will somehow get my weight to where I want it and stay there. But this year, I have tried to let that go. I am not sure if that is a good idea or not, but I am so totally tired of agonizing over everything I eat, beating myself up and feeling depressed when I do not reach my goal. This year I have decided to go with a different goal (which I wrote about earlier) and let the eating thing go for now. I need to go with my "just do it" even when I don't feel like it til the "feel like it" comes. This applies to my household chores, laundry, ironing, scrapbooking and most everything else. Things are going great in this area of my life and there have been some very positive changes. Kendra would be so proud of me that I'm using my "Sidetracked Housewives" cards again and getting so much accomplished. The kids used to dread those things and make fun of me,,,,,,but they actually work for me.

Kitchen island...

Laundry Room...

Dining Room Table...

Scrapbook Room Table....

Scrapbook Room Floor....

If you have viewed my last pictures of the house, you will see that these 5 areas have been greatly improved. I know some of it was due to the holidays, but my scrapbook room definitely was not!

Anyway, my post about food and wandered off into something else, but that really is my point. My focus is in another direction this year and it is working for me!

Sad day yesterday!

Went to an all day crop at The Paper Moon in Washington, about a half hour from home, where I spend most of my time scrapping. My favorite store ever! Used to go to the store when they were in their other tiny room and we cropped in the horribly lit tea room next door. Helped them move to their present location down the street, going down one set of stairs and back up the other to the new location. Most of the girlfriends I have in life I have met there.....Karin, Joan, Wendy, Cynthia, Chris, Lisa and it just goes on. I sat with the owner, Cynthia, yesterday and found out that she is closing the store! I'm just devastated, though not surprised. I knew things had been slowing down for her and she had even taken a part-time job elsewhere to make up the difference. But now it's come to the point where it needs to be done. She has tried to sell the store, but no takers.

Now the store is being closed and I'm so sad. It's like a home away from home for me. David always says that I helped build the store because I have spent so much there and a lot of time. She is going to sell off all her stock and all the stuff in the classroom......which is absolutely loaded with stuff. I just can't get beyond the fact that some of these people I will never see again. They all live in one town, but I live further away and don't know how that will work out. I just need to get past this and realize that things change and life will go on. I cried all the way home last night remembering all the good times we all have had together on the long weekend crops....even trips to stay places together and cropped. Hopefully we will all be able to still keep in touch and enjoy this craft that we love so much!

Playing goofy games!

Dinner at the Brick Oven downstairs from The Paper Moon.

I'm in blue....at Brick Oven.

One of the funniest girls I have ever cropped with....

The flag in the background is individual layouts. At a crop a few years ago, we were each given a page with either stars or stripes already on them and told to find a picture that we had with us that would work with a patriotic, Americana or military theme. Something to tie into the pages. It turned out great and mine is the top left corner of the flag. I had a picture of the Smokey Mountains and wrote about America the Beautiful.

Saturday: The Beholder
In light of a strange experience I had a the doctor's office this week, I thought this wisdom from the fabulous Miss Piggy was just perfect for today. . .

“Beauty is in the eye of the beholder and it may be necessary from time to time to give a stupid or misinformed beholder a black eye.”-Miss Piggy

People can be insensitive. I remember a time at work (David and I still refer to it from time to time and laugh) when I was using a knife that was not sharp enough. We have to cut thick plastic straps that band out newspapers and magazines. I kept pulling and pulling on the band with the knife and it finally cut through. But only to pull the knife up to my face right between my eyes and cut myself. It was bleeding but not an extremely deep cut. But it did bruise and leave a permanent scar. One of the guys, that is actually a very good friend of mine, said to me several days later, "well, at least you are married and have someone already"....like I was some kind of freak now that no one would want!!! I could have just punched him. Really if you don't get up close to me and look, you can't even see it. I was just thankful that I did not hit my eye instead of worrying about my looks. All I can say is "You Go, Miss Piggy!"
